When can I put vegetables in the slow cooker with my pot roast?
Question by Anna E: When can I put vegetables in the slow cooker with my pot roast?
I'm making my first pot roast in the slow cooker today and I'm not sure when I can add my carrots and potatoes. The recipe I made I adjusted from one I found online, 2.4 lb roast, can of cream of mushroom, half a packet of onion soup mix and a cup of water.
Anything else I should add?

I put everything in at the same time and have never had a problem.

Well, it depends on how long your cooking the roast and whether if your cooking it on high or low. Best advice I can give you tho is usallly what I do: If I know Im gonna cook the roast 8 hours in my CrockPot I plan to put in my veggies about 1/2 way through. Cuz carrots AND potatoes both take a lil longer than other veggies. I like my veggies soft b/c of my lil ones but if you like them a lil on the firmer side wait. So if your cookin it for 8 hours put veggies in at the 5 hour mark. Let me know how the cream of mushroom turns out. It sounds great but I have never tried it! Good Eating!!
I would suggest about an before you want to serve. Remember you need to take your meat out in time to allow it to rest covered in a warm place. Allow to rest for at least 20% of the cooking time, so factor that in when you add your veggies.
If necessary you could boost the heat to full power.
Many will say to throw them in at the start, but I feel they will loose most of their goodness. I would skip the onion soup and use fresh onions. Just quarter an skin, gently trim the hairy end and leave stem intact and add at the start. The onion will release good flavour and the onion quarters should hold together so you will get the loveliness of the onions.
Too many people just think of frying them.
