I've had a NUMBER of slow cookers/rice cookers over the years and this cooker is one of the BEST Ever!! It is a little slow to get started (having a slight time delay), but when it gets started it does a GREAT Job!! (I would suggest the Larger Unit, you won't regret the bigger size). -- The Clay surface really keeps the food warm, and the food seems Tastier (with not the usual aluminum taste from other [more modern] cookers. And I'm sure the Teflon on most popular cookers can't be 100% healthy over many years). -- And for the reviewer who had problems with this unit? (You probably just got the one RARE defective unit [It Happens, That's Life]). Mine has ALWAYS cooked my stuff 100% PERFECTLY and ALWAYS been Reliable!! -- I've also dealt with the VitaClay/Essenergy Response company (CALL [or Email] THEM if you have a problem) and I have ALWAYS been treated with the UTMOST professionalism and respect!! ( I broke my Clay Lid [My Fault] and I called to purchase another one [NO PROBLEM/FAST Shipping] - I also did something like this in the past, when I placed a HOT pot inside a COLD Freezer [CRACK!! - Again, MY Fault]) -- So I would HIGHLY recommend this product!! Buy It! (it is 100% WORTH IT)

I would definitely purchase this produce again. From packing, instructions, to the end result(s)...you will not be disappointed. I order alot from Amazon...from a Kindle to a slow cooker. They have never let me down. All products arrive on a timely basis and they keep me updated on all transactions! No, I am not employed by them; they just deserve my compliments. Rival Rice Cookers

The slow cooker's history is not a long one. This cooker was brought out as the Bean Pot. It was basically a crock pot on a tray that heated up. The Beanery was the actually the first true forerunner for slow cookers. "Naxon Utilities Corporation" was responsible for developing that one.

This began Rival's exploration into the world of slow cookers. The company found that many types of foods cooked wonderfully with this same method. Once this was discovered 25,000 cookers were brought out and sold to the public as the first official Crock-Pot during 1971.

Also people were encouraged to save energy. Through using the low-wattage Crock-Pot this was easy.

With more women holding down jobs, Rival started to show them how easy fixing meals would be with their slow cooker. Rival knew that it would appeal to women that they could cook a meal, while they were away at work. Rival remains the leader in the market today with its slow cooker. They command a whopping 85 percent of the market. Many cookbooks have even been written chocked full of meal recipes specifically for the cookers of today.

You can find deluxe large-size models if you have a large family. You can cook everything from beef stew to chuck roast in them.

Everyone has such a busy life these days the slow-cooker is used on a daily basis in some homes.

You can find them ranging from a 16-ounce size up to a 7.4-quart size. This is the size of the crock. The low setting heats things to a temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit with the high setting heating food to 190 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

This amount varies depending on what you are cooking. Special rice cookers are no more than an offshoot of the original slow cookers. So the history goes on for the very convenient cooking tool.

I like cooking in a clay pot rather than aluminum. I've tried brown rice and soup in it and both are excellent. Moisture does collect in the rubber gasket of the outer container lid so care must be taken that it's completely dry before storing it. I'm very careful in handling the clay pot. It seems like it could be fragile and the instructions warn against temperature extremes.

I received this product as a gift and I love it! Stews are effortless. Just cut up some veggies and meat, add stock and press "stew". In four hours it's perfect. This machine turns really tough inexpensive cuts of meat into tender stews and soups.

The rice cooks much better than in the cheaper rice cooker I have. No "crunchy" rice at the bottom of the pot.

There's something about the clay cooking which cooks the food more evenly. It is also very easy to clean. There are many other features this cooker has which I haven't explored yet (the product comes with a recipe book), but even if it just made rice and stew I'd say it was an excellent buy!

Q&A: Omitting rice in a crock pot recipe?

Posted by Chris | Slow Cookers | Thursday 27 May 2010 10:07 pm

Question by Lauren G: Omitting rice in a crock pot recipe?
Does anyone know much liquid you would reduce in a recipe if you were omitting the rice in the crock pot?

I like brown rice and a lot of recipes call for converted rice. SO I would like to leave out the rice. Do I cut the liquids in half?
Ok, I tried it last night with regular brown rice and it didn't work. So tonight I am going to make another pot of rice and still use the chicken. At least that won't go to waste.

Best answer:

Answer by Greeneyed
