Question by KittyKattarina: Slow cooker pot roast. Would this recipe work?
I want to make a pot roast in my new slow cooker but I cant find a recipe I like. This was the idea my mother gave me but she was just guessing that it would work.

Big chunks of onion, carrots, and potato placed in the bottom.
Roll roast in lipton onion soup mix.
Place roast on top and add a can of beef broth.
Cook low for 8 hours.

Anyone that has used a slow cooker allot, please let me know if you think this will work and if not can anyone share a good slow cooker pot roast recipe with me. (one that does not use canned mushroom soup)

Thank you!

Sounds good. The only difference I do with mine is I sear the outside of my roast and place it on the bottom (so it has more direct heat). Good luck. OH you can also go to crock pot's website (http://www.crock-pot.com/Recipes.aspx).

Question by Danny's Mommy 9/10/09: Cooking Chicken in the crock pot?
I have a crock pot chicken recipe that calls for boneless, skinless chicken breast but all I have is half breasts with bone and skin. Can I just remove the skin and leave the bones in and cook it in the crock pot like the recipe? The chicken will be shredded before serving. Will the bones effect the cooking of the meat? Or do I really need to take the time to remove all the bones before cooking?

Need Slow Cooker Recipes for ground meat/turkey?

Question by Anon Chicago: Need Slow Cooker Recipes for ground meat/turkey?
I love using my crockpot but have been unable to find ground beef/turkey recipes where you DON'T have to cook the meat, etc. first. Maybe it's simply not possible or suggested to throw raw meat in the crockpot but if I can do it with chicken, why not ground meat? Most recipes of this type have noodles which also have to be pre-cooked. I mean really, if I have to pre-cook everything first why even bother with the slow cooker at all? So if anyone has any recipes to not have to pre-cook meat or anything else, please share. Thanks!

Most ground meat must be cooked first (a) to remove excess fat and (b) so it doesn't look so anemic when cooked. It needs to be browned for flavor enhancement, too.

Why don't you brown 4-5 lbs. of ground beef or turkey at once, divide into 1 lb. packages, and freeze. Then when you want a ground meat crock pot dish, you have the meat already browned and premeasured!

Question by MSB: Need Crock Pot oatmeal cooking tips?
Greetings :-) ... I have some oatmeal trouble. I am new to crockpot cooking.

Twice I tried making the non-instant rolled oats in the morning (recipe from about.com: crock pot oatmeal) both times it came out nasty mushy gray and gelatinous. The fruit kinda disintigrated.

I had the crock pot on low, first time 8 hrs w/the fruit in it like the recipe said, next time I tried it for 6 hrs and withheld the apples thinking I'd throw them in in the moring. Didn't help-- fresh apples & gray mush were no better.

It looks like it's cooking too long... I suppose I could try it for 4 hrs, but it kinda defeats the purpose of the crock pot because I'd end up having to get up at 4 am to put it on.

I'm thinking I might have better results with steel-cut, but the kids prefer rolled. So I wanna give it one more try with the rolled oats.

Maybe leaving it on the "warm" setting instead of on low? Or will the rolled oats just make it impossible?

Advise me, please, veteran crock-potters.
Edit-- the regular rolled oats take 20-25 minutes to prepare. We love oatmeal but as the mornings get more rushed, and as I work late and am not really fully awake at 7 or 8 AM, I find myself not making it as much as we like-- we'll eat it 3 or 4 times a week when we have time, but only 1 time or so when we don't. I've seen cooking shows and recipes where they use the crockpot and thought it would be nice to wake up to a steaming bowl of oatmeal without having to cook but I'm beginning to wonder if it can be done. I don't like the instant kind.

I would think cooking oatmeal for that long is inevitably going to break it down to mush unless, like you said, it's steel cut since they're heartier.

Oatmeal is so quick and easy to make on the stove, why bother with a crock pot?

The vegetable cook slower so put them on the bottom of the slow cooker pot. Brown the roast for the best flavor and then place the roast over the veggies. Add the liquid. Cover. Cook.
