Are they more energy efficent than stovetops or ovens?

I'm not sure about energy efficient, but they definitely don't heat the house up as much as the other two, and less work. (I use mine ALOT). Less heat is important, depending on where you live (I'm in Texas, so less heat is crucial in the summer!)

They can be. I wrote an article a while back where I found some stats for the various cooking methods and compared them.
Some of what I estimated:
Appliance Assumed Cook Time Cost
Electric Oven 1 hour $0.30 – $0.60
Electric Range-top Burner 20 minutes $0.02 – $0.10
Gas Oven 1 hour $0.05 – $0.11
Gas Range-top Burner 20 minutes $.01 – $.03
Microwave Oven 3 minutes $0.01 or less
Crock Pot 4 hours (on high) $0.08
Crock Pot 8 hours (on low) $0.16
